Malaysian state launches Islamic currency
On Thursday 12 August 2010, 16:40 SGT
A Malaysian state on Thursday launched the Islamic dinar and dirham as an alternative currency, allowing the golden and silver coins to be used as legal tender alongside conventional banknotes.
Authorities in northern Kelantan state, which is ruled by the Islamic opposition party PAS, said the Islamic currencies would be used in many shops in the state in addition to the national currency, the ringgit.
"We have over 1,000 shops that have signed up to our campaign and agreed to accept the dinar and dirham for the purchase of goods," state cabinet minister Husam Musa told AFP.
He said signboards have been erected in the main market in the state capital Kota Bharu to show the conversion table between the dinar and ringgit, and participating shops will display stickers to encourage people to use the coins.
"The response has been very positive and all the coins which were worth a total of 2.0 million ringgit (629,000 dollars) have been sold out at the launch today," said Husam, who is in charge of economic and finance planning.
According to Islamic law, the dinar measures 4.25 grams of gold, while the dirham is 3.0 grams of pure silver.
A golden coin is equivalent to about 582 ringgit (183 dollars) while the silver coin is worth around 13 ringgit but their values fluctuate according to market prices.
Husam said the dinar and dirham currencies can also be used dealings with state goverment agencies, such as paying "zakat", or alms for the poor.
There has been a long debate in Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country with large ethnic Chinese and Indian communities, to introduce the coins as legal tender nationally.
Former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, whose administration promoted a moderate form of Islam that emphasised economic and scientific development, shot down the proposal to use the Islamic currencies.
But his predecessor, Mahathir Mohamad, was an advocate of the dinar system and urged Muslim countries to use it as a trade instrument.
The debate has died down since current Prime Minister Najib Razak came to power last year.

5 Things Financial Advisors Must Do Now
1. Commit to change.
Commit to making the changes necessary to take advantage of this opportunity. The market has changed. For you to be successful, your business practices must change to achieve optimal results.
2. Conduct rediscovery meetings.
At a time when many advisors are avoiding their clients, you should do the opposite. Schedule "rediscovery" meetings with your top clients and develop their total client profile mind maps. This will reassure your clients that you understand them and are the right advisor as well as insulate them from your competitors.
Offer to provide their business associates, friends and family a value added second opinion service. Let them know how much the market volatility is affecting everyone. Share with them that 4 out of 5 investors are looking to switch advisors and you are more than happy to provide the people they care about with a 'second opinion' to make sure they are making smart decisions with their money.
3. Follow up with the referrals.
Schedule appointments, conduct second opinion analyses, and demonstrate your client centered experience. Use discovery meetings and mind maps for each prospect. This level of service is something that most affluent investors have never encountered and it makes it very comfortable for them to transfer assets to your management because they know you understand their unique needs.
Our coaching clients have realized substantial increases in assets under management in a very short period of time utilizing this one simple tactic.
4. Conduct center of influence interviews.
Identify 10 individuals who have a high degree of influence in your niche market; the movers and shakers within your community.
Interview them and create a list of their top concerns, the themes of challenges you heard from them and then the opportunities that will present themselves. These interviews will give you insights about your market that you didn't have before. This will empower you to uncover new approaches, identify new organizations, and gain new access to great prospects.
5. Develop strategic alliances.
Set up meetings with CPA's, attorneys and other professional advisors who serve your target market. Our research clearly shows that more than 50% of client referrals with $1 million or more in assets come from other professionals. Fully define your value proposition and your approach prior to each meeting so these professionals understand how you can help them achieve their business goals while serving their clients well.

How to Survive Unemployment
Instructions
Step 1
Establish a routine. Not having to get up and go to work in the morning may seem like a benefit of unemployment. But without a daily routine, your life can unravel pretty quickly. Make yourself a daily schedule and stick to it.
Step 2
Contact your support system. Even though unemployment is nothing to brag about, talk to your friends and family about your situation. Their support may give you the emotional boost you need to get through this difficult time. Also, they may be able to help you find work, at least on a temporary basis.
Step 3
Adjust your budget. There's no way to know how long unemployment will last, so until you have a steady paycheck again, cut unnecessary expenses. Happy hour is not so happy when it doesn't follow a full day of work and unemployed people have plenty of time to pick up their own dry cleaning. Eliminate all non-essentials from your budget temporarily.
Step 4
Research free and inexpensive entertainment. Surviving unemployment requires occasional fun. Find out where the dollar movie theater is and which day they offer half price popcorn. Make note of all the free entertainment options available to you, from a walk at the local park to dinner once a week at Mom and Dad's house.
Step 5
List your contacts. You will need contacts to get back into the workforce. Make a list of all the people you interacted with while you were on the job. Include casual acquaintances from other companies in your building, vendors you regularly do business with and friends of friends you met at lunch. It feels good to see how many people you actually know. One of them could be your ticket back to the 9-to-5 world.
Step 6
Volunteer. Of course, this is not a substitute for finding a paying job, but volunteering gives you a purpose and helps structure your day. Through volunteering, you will stay in touch with working people and have an opportunity to demonstrate you abilities. Volunteering could also bring you into contact with people who are worse off than you are, helping you realize that unemployment isn't the worst thing that could happen to you.

how to be good looking
Start from the inside out.

Be healthy. People who look healthy look good. And what better way to look healthy than to be healthy? If you aren't taking good care of your body, now is a good time to start. Begin with the basics: drink more water, eat healthy, and get fit.
Be confident. Your self-esteem really does affect the way you look. It changes the way you carry yourself. People who are confident (not arrogant) get noticed.
Be a good person. Develop good character to match your good looks. Be humble and honest. Give people more to appreciate.
2Be hygienic. Keep up with your physical maintenance. Make it a habit to take care of yourself on a daily basis. Be well-groomed. These details make a big difference. Focus on:
cleanliness - shower daily, wash hands regularly
scent - wear a deodorant; wear cologne or perfume, if you wish
nails - keep them trimmed and clean; if you have long fingernails, keep them painted and shaped
skin - wear sunblock; apply lotion daily to keep your skin soft
hands - apply lotion after every time you wash your hands to keep them soft and smooth
feet - apply lotion after taking a shower; keep them clean; prevent foot odor
teeth - brush at least two times a day, especially after coffee or smoking; you shouldn't smoke: it is bad for both health and looks (it causes wrinkles and yellowed teeth). Floss; visit the dentist regularly; whiten your teeth if necessary.
hair - keep it neat and clean; If you have unwanted body hair, then consider shaving or waxing it.
An improvement in health and a haircut can both go a very long way.
3Be distinct. As human beings, we gravitate towards what is rare and unique. You're an individual--there's no one in the world like you--and you should take advantage of that. There's a lot of pressure to look like others, but no one remembers a clone. Be yourself and flaunt it. Emphasize the things that make you unique, whether it's your hair, your height, your shape, your eyes, and so on. Make your appearance reflect your unique personality.
4Dress well. Take the time to pick out clothes that you feel comfortable in and that make you feel happy to look in the mirror. Don't get obsessed with clothing, just find several outfits that look good on you. Don't dress like you just rolled out of bed. Show people that you care about your appearance.
5Smile. Don't walk around all the time with a frown or even a neutral expression on your face. Even a little smile will make you more attractive. What else could be more inviting and approachable?

Attend all classes.
There is an extremely large correlation between attendance and passing this course. Each class utilizes tools and concepts learned from previous classes. In the rare event that you must be absent from class, be sure to complete the material covered during your absence so that you will be able to accomplish the tasks asked of you when you return to class:
Obtain the notes from a peer;
Read and complete the activity from your text that was covered in class;
Outline the important information discovered while doing the activity;
Compare your outline with your peers class notes;
Complete the associated homework;
After you have reviewed the notes and worked on homework, go to the tutor lab or make an appointment with your instructor to discuss any questions you have about the material.
Actively participate during classes. Do not wait for your peers to hand you the solutions.
After completing an in-class task ask your self what the goal of the task was.
Why did the instructor ask you to do this specific task?
What did you learn from the task?
How did this build off of or extend a previously known skill or concept?
Constantly ask yourself and others "why".
Why did you think to start the problem in this way? What was your intuition?
Why is this step valid (mathematically legal)?
Why is this middle step helpful? In other words, how will this middle step help us finish the problem?
Fill out a 3x5 card with any questions about the material covered that day or a mathematical revelation on your part for the day. Your instructor will have 3x5 cards available every day and these can be filled out anonymously if you prefer.
Take notes during class. Be sure to take notes on what is said as well as what is written on the board. Keep in mind that it is not humanly possible to capture everything and pay attention, so it is extremely important to fine-tune your notes after class. If you need help developing your note taking skills, visit the Academic Skills Center. They will be more than happy to help and have a College Success Seminar devoted entirely to note taking. All College Success Seminars are free to WMU students.
Fine-tune your class notes as soon after class as possible. Do not wait more than a day. The longer you wait the less you will recall of important classroom discussions. These rewritten notes will be more organized than in class notes and will allow you to study for exams more efficiently.
Summarize the activities and discussions from class.
Indicate and explain important ideas/concepts.
Provide connections between this class and previous classes.
Phrase questions on topics unclear to you. These questions might be answered while you outline your text. If not, be sure to go to the tutor lab, your instructor, or the SI leader for assistance.
Read and outline your textbook.
Be sure to rewrite definitions in your own words and create/present examples to clarify the definitions.
Reread examples to determine what point the authors are trying to make with the examples given.
The Academic Skills Center provides a College Success Seminar devoted to reading a text, so utilize this free service for additional help.
Talk to peers to fill in each other’s gaps.
Do all assigned homework.
If you struggle with any of the assigned problems, find a similar problem in the text or online homework (MathXL or WileyPlus) for extra practice.
Be sure to show all work, justify each step, and write down any formula you use.
If you use a graphing calculator write down the equation(s) you typed into the calculator.
Check your solutions. Many assigned problems will not be collected. You are responsible for determining whether your solutions are correct. This may mean discussing your homework with your peers.
After we complete a chapter, look over your notes (rewritten class notes, text notes, and comments from peers). Summarize the content of these and look for connections within the chapter and connections between the new material with previous knowledge.
